What are Biodegradable Urns?

Biodegradable urns are cremation urns that are environmentally friendly, they are made from 100% natural materials and will naturally biodegrade over time, enhancing the environment around it. It’s a very comforting feeling to know that a loved one has been laid to rest and has become a part of the environment.

What are the Biodegradable urns made from?

We supply a variety of biodegradable urns, from urns that are suitable for water burial to those which are used for land burial. They are made up from different materials mainly consisting of sand, salt, gelatin, corn starch and/or biodegradable recycled paper, all of which are 100% environmentally friendly and will naturally disintegrate over time. Please see individual products for more detail on their exact contents and instructions.

What Do I Do With the Urn?

Water Urns – Our water urns will come complete with a dissolvable bag that the ashes must be placed inside. Your funeral director will be happy to help with this process. The bag will then fit into the urn and be ready for the ceremony. The urns contain small holes in the base to allow water to enter and the urn to slowly sink, the speed at which the urn sinks will depend on the style and water conditions – see our water urns for more information.

Land Urns – Much like our water urns, our biodegradable land burial urns contain a biodegradable bag which the ashes must be placed into before being placed into the urn, your funeral director will be happy to aid in this process. The urn will then be buried at a location of your choice and will naturally dissolve into the earth, the time at which this happens will depend on a few factors (including burial depth, urn style & soil conditions) For more information on the laws and regulations of land burial, please see our Earth Urn page.

Tree Urns – the Bio Urn tree urns are a modern approach to burying a loved one, an approach many feel celebrates the life and provides a loving memorial. The Bios Urn will come complete with fertilised soil and a seed of your choice, ready for burial. The seed will then grow into a memorial tree of your loved one. You can use the Bios Urn to plant a new seed or place a sapling into the main section, for full information please visit our range of Bio Tree Urns.

Some of our biodegradable urns are suitable for both water and land burial, please see each product for individual instructions and advice.

What sizes do the Urns come in?

A large number of our biodegradable urns come in a range of sizes, from full sizes urns, to keepsake urns and urns for pets – please see individual products for size guides and feel free to contact us if you need any additional information.

Will the Urns Last Out of Water / Earth?

Our water and earth urns are suitable for short and long terms storage of ashes even without being buried. Please be advised to read individual urn specifications to make sure it is suitable for the amount of time you are looking for.
